Watercolour and Gouache Paintings

Using colour to express the personality of the sitter.

Watercolour is a wonderful  medium, and because it is translucent, it really lends itself to portraits. You can get a lovely feeling of a living being from it. Often people choose a watercolour in just one colour like sepia, or they might prefer a portrait incorporating lots of colours. I am very happy to discuss the colours you would like to express the personality of the sitter. They can also reflect the room where you would like to place the painting.

I always do a preliminary sketch for you to look at, before going onto a final painting. Many people also like to buy the sketches as well as independent portraits. This is completely optional, but if you like I can build the sketch into a coloured pencil portrait, which people often like as much as the final watercolour.

Gouache can give stronger less translucent colours, and is often used in children’s illustrations. So if you would like a portrait where the colours really stand out, this might work for you.
